Way Down upon the Suwannee River

We awoke to a quickly warming day on Thursday with mid '60s predicted and abundant sunshine. I suggested it might be a good day to check on Terri's property on the Suwannee River and try out my 9 1/2 foot dingy. Within an hour we were on our way to the riverfront lot about 20 minutes from Madison, Florida. When we arrived we found the river to be much higher than our last visit with a swift current that I estimated to be about 5 knots. This beautiful, remote place is so quiet the only sounds you hear are the swirl of the river or the call of a Whippoorwill.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch and then launched the dingy. We motored against the swift current dodging a few floating logs but developed engine trouble. I started rowing the boat to the ramp but it was a challenge across the strong current. We decided to fish from the shore but had no luck. I had hoped to see one of the many alligators on the river but rapidly floating logs were the closest things to a gator that we saw. We didn't see another boat or another person all day until we saw some people who live up the road on our returning trip home. It was a very relaxing and great day at one of our favorite getaways.

Port Charlotte, a Warm Winter Retreat

What a change it has been from sleepy Cedar Key to arriving in Port Charlotte Florida. It is high season here, heavy traffic, crowded restaurants but WARM WEATHER. Our daily high temperatures have been from 70 to 80 degrees every day. We are staying at the very cool little 12 room resort, Banana Bay Motel, on Charlotte Harbor and our front door is about 12 steps from the water. There is a very long fishing & boat rental dock, heated swimming pool, hammock, and we have found the small rooms to be very comfortable with kitchenettes and gas grills outside your door. For us, if the weather is warm it is more important to have nice amenities outside than a large fancy room.

Banana Bay Motel offers kayak, bicycle and pontoon boat rentals. There is a very long fishing dock, but so far we have only caught nine stingray. A recent cold front caused a fish kill of tarpon, snook, and catfish although some species such as sea trout and red fish were not affected. Many evenings people gather at the dock area to watch the beautiful sunsets, and we have met many new interesting friends from England, Canada, Michigan and Wisconsin. After a week here we have decided to stay for two more nights.

We visited Englewood Beach near here a few days ago but found it to be a bit cool with the brisk wind blowing over the cool waters of the Gulf of Mexico in January. In my opinion, you can't beat staying on the bay this time of year, especially for $60-$90 per night in South Florida. Banana Bay gets top marks for a Beach Bum Type Resort in the winter.

I Want to Go where its WARM!...first stop Cedar Key

What do you do after 12 days of near record cold in the south? Our answer was to take a road trip to South Florida, destination Port Charlotte, but first a stop in lovely Cedar Key. We arrived there to a nice mid 60's day.

Cedar Key is a lovely, quiet little fishing village in northwest Florida. It has a Old Florida charm to it and reminded me of an old time unspoiled historic Florida town. You can easily walk from one end of town to the other. Walking and bicycles seem to be the order of the day with very little traffic or noise. We stayed at the Park Place Motel across the road from a nice little park, beach and boat dock directly on the Gulf of Mexico. Although a studio type condo, the Park Place was equipped with a large deck, kitchen, living area and king sized bed. It is challenging for Terri and I to travel as we take our two small dogs with us but we found the Park Place to be a very nice pet friendly place to stay.

Cedar Key is the largest producer of farm raised clams in the country and has some great restaurants. We had dinner at Tonys Seafood and were treated to the best clam chowder I have ever tasted. We split the seafood platter (29.95) which included fresh raw oysters, crab, super fresh grilled shrimp, grouper, clams and a side.

Cedar Key was a lovely first stop and being just 3 hours from our home I am sure we will visit this quiet, peaceful city again. Next stop...Port Charlotte, Florida.

Happy New Year from Georgia

Terri and I are spending the winter at her place in south Georgia. We enjoy oranges and fresh sqeezed orange juice from the orange grove in her back yard every morning. After a very nice Christmas, we had a chilly New Years Day (mid 50's) and enjoyed watching the Florida Gators win the Sugar Bowl 51-24 over Cincinati.

I sailed Sand Dollar about 25 miles south on the river to a quaint little marina and yacht club with a tiki bar and swimming pool and we are looking forward to spending more time there when the weather warms up a bit.

I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope your Holiday Season was a great one.
